Rachel Duvall, MFA

In 2006 I began a major journey, graduate study of acting at the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver, Colorado. It was such an exciting time in my life. I was thrilled to be there and ready to soak up all the information and experience I could get. My first two years there were challenging. And aside from a seemingly temporary bout with TMJ, I felt wonderful and was having a great time.

You can imagine the disappointment when in my third year, the TMJ pain returned and became so severe I had to resign myself from all productions and activities. For many TMJ is temporary and goes away without treatment, but for some the pain can become so severe as to be completely debilitating. My life became a daily struggle just to get through. I consistently put on a “good face” though physically I was in agony. I became extremely depressed and felt my only option was to leave school. I spent almost all of my time seeing doctors, dentists, and specialists. I was desperately searching for a "cure" so I could finish school and get my life back.

During this time I became increasingly aware of how my body was speaking to me. Pain, I found, can be a major wake-up call. There were many long meditative walks where I continually looked inside myself and asked the question “why is this happening to me?” Ultimately I learned that if I listened, my body would let me know what it needed. My body was communicating to me that I needed to make major changes in my life.

In the end, the experience was incredibly empowering. I learned I was the person ultimately responsible for my own healing. There was no doctor or dentist or practitioner that could give me the answers. This was my journey and on that journey I discovered what I now know as the power of self-healing.

Once my body began to turn around and heal, I felt inspired to move. So I went to check out a Nia class. And I was hooked.

Not only had I found a way of moving that aided in my continuous physical healing, but I had found a way of exercising my spirit. And I had found a true community of people all celebrating themselves and each other.

I have learned that I need to surround myself with women of like-minds who will continually support my journey wherever it takes me. I've found this community of women at Oriens.

I am continuing to educate myself about human experience by studying to receive my Masters in Social Work at New York University and will eventually study to become a psychotherapist. It is my passion to share with others the healing and joy I have found with Nia. I hope to teach others that all the answers they seek are within themselves. All that is needed is awareness and a willingness to explore. The joy that can be found is limitless!
