Dancers have very special needs. I know this. I was a dancer with a career spanning more than 25 years. I began touring and performing ballet at the age of ten. I was an original member of San Francisco's Joe Goode Performance Group, and retired from New York's Trisha Brown Company in 1995. I've guested for many independent choreographers and served on the dance faculties of Oberlin College, UC Sonoma State and Hobart & William Smith Colleges. I have choreographed for ensembles and coached and taught professionals, including master classes for Joe Goode, Trisha Brown and Belgian choreographer Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker's company and school.

We know where you are . . . we've been there!

Acupuncture and body work are absolutely what kept me functioning at professional performance level. When I was just 24 I had a knee injury that was crippling. I couldn't plie and was sidelined. The orthopedic specialist scheduled arthroscopic surgery. Someone in the company convinced me to try their acupuncturist, the genius healer Kelly Corbett in San Francisco. In 2 sessions I was back in rehearsal and cancelling surgery! From there we rebuilt a chronically dislocating shoulder. Next we took on my immune system, taught me to eat properly, and helped me gain robust health for the first time in my life. Along the way I learned to handle injuries while on the road, how to dance smarter, recover faster. I owe the length and health of my career to acupuncture and bodywork.

The kind of acupuncture that managed my career was primarily Dr. Tan's famous Balance Method for Instant Results, supplemented as needed with Classical Acupuncture including gua sha, cupping, electro-stim and tui na massage.

Cold Laser can take down swelling, relieve muscle pain, soothe tendons, ligaments and discs, heal injuries and speed skin recovery from floor burns. Add it to acupuncture or Bowen, or use it as a stand-alone quick fix.

Bowen Therapy I came to long after I retired. Yet, it is a perfect approach for dancers to use at the end of the rehearsal week, when they have one or two days before heading back into class or rehearsal. Like acupuncture it is a "smart" system of cuing that requests the body to identify and prefer a balanced mechanical state. Very small and delicate touch adjustments make it feel like energy work, but the results are similar to chiropractic--the body literally resets itself.

This is a terrific, immediate intervention for injury and misalignment. Also like acupuncture, encourages the body to rest, repair and recharge.
