Quantum Detox-January 7, 2012

Published Saturday, December 31, 2011

“Out with the old and in with the new. “We say this every New Year’s and within weeks to months we are back doing what we’ve always done, fearing what we’ve always feared, struggling the way we’ve always struggled.

We settle for surviving, yet we long to be thriving! But, to get different results, we must do things differently!

Quantum Detox
for Body, Mind & Spirit
Saturday January 7, 11-6pm
~
A Day of Experiences & Information to help you
Raise Your Bar on Personal Wellbeing & Power in 2012!

The beginning of change is letting go of what holds us back, what is not working. Detoxification literally means getting rid of toxins-the things that poison us. Poisonous substances, poisonous thoughts, poisonous behaviors.

Imagine your house if you never cleaned it. Imagine your office if all the paper simply accumulated. Imagine your refrigerator if you never threw anything out!

Your body, your mind and your energy field are just like your house, office and refrigerator-they need cleaning!

For the Body, detoxification is essential to manage Holiday indulgences and accumulated toxin loads. Your natural detoxification systems were not designed for the intensity of assault modern life puts them through. They need to be rebooted and refreshed 1-2 times per year so that you may harness the wellness wiring within you that makes truly vital health possible. Like your computer, when you fail to do the maintenance you end up with bugs, faulty programs and more risk than you want to take.

For the Mind & Spirit- You are powerful beyond measure! Yet, "whether you think you can, or you think you can't...you're right!" That's how powerful your mind is.

Our thoughts control our feelings. Learning to manage our minds, listen to our innate wisdom and clean our energy:

  • Fills us with joy -- to enjoy our lives
  • Creates self-confidence -- to handle what happens, no matter what
  • Brings high self-esteem -- to manifest our dreams
  • Eliminates negative thinking -- to reach our potential
  • Enhances our relationships -- to offer and enjoy more value
  • Puts us in control -- of how we perceive and experience the world
  • Brings clarity of purpose -- to guide our choices
  • Yields feelings of profound fulfillment

3 Tips to Minimize Sugar's Impact on You this Holiday

Published Tuesday, December 13, 2011

by Elizabeth Carpenter, MS, L.Ac.

Holidays and Sugar...

Like beach and sand, the two are not all that separable. The impact is not just on our waistlines. Sugar hits us in our moods, our energy levels, our sleep, our productivity, our short and long term health. Sugar creates havoc for our hormones, right down to our cells. But 'tis the season! And oh what fun!

Here are 3 Tips to Help You Lessen Sugar's Impact this Holiday Season

1. Add a Fat or Protein

One part of the problem with sugar is that when it floods your system in that concentrated sweetie, your body goes into crisis to manage the seismic jolt. So when you decide to indulge, have some fat or protein with it, to help your body handle it.

2. Clean Up Before & After

Irrigate & flush! Since you will be offered sugar everywhere you go for the next few weeks, expect you'll be indulging. Your body cleans itself through your consumption of pure, filtered or spring water. Since you know you'll be making a mess, give it plenty of extra-preferably hot with lemon. Your digestion, your skin and every other system will thank you.

3. Burst

With all the extra social engagements and calories, it's hard to keep an exercise routine. But you do have 4 minutes every other day to turn yourself into a fat-burning machine. When you flood yourself with sugar your body turns it to fat for safety purposes. "Bursting" (1 minute of getting your heart rate up through intense arm/leg movement -then resting until your heart rate is all the way down) is something you can do anywhere, with no equipment, no special outfit and no need for a shower. It initiates fat-burning for the next 36 hours. Ideas? As many jumping jacks as you can fit in one minute, or high knee running in place while you flail your arms like a crazy person for one minute, or wild dancing to music for one minute. Just get your heart rate UP for ONE minute-not more-then rest until it's all the way down and repeat the sequence 3x. More is not better-just do the 4 burst minutes every other day. Consult your physician if there is any reason to suspect elevating your heart rate might not be safe for you.

4. OK, 4 Tips-January Detox

In January Oriens is doing a New Year's Detox to jumpstart your health & weight loss goals. Annual or semi-annual detox is a critical health strategy. Unlike fad or unpleasant "cleanses," this is clean up at the cellular level--where it really counts.

What can a Cellular Level Detox do for you?

  • Balance Your Hormones
  • Unburden Your Body
  • Lose Weight

Embracing the Gray Zone: Thriving (not merely surviving) in Major Life Transitions

Published Friday, December 09, 2011

by Kelley Black

Scuba divers in the cold and murky waters of New England occasionally confront what they call the “gray zone.” Imagine you are in full scuba gear and jump from a dive boat off the Cape Cod Coast. You plan to descend to the ocean floor, 65 feet below. At about 30 feet, you notice that, when you look up toward the surface of the water you see nothing – except for the boats anchor line disappearing into the grayness. When you look down, you see nothing again, except for the anchor line disappearing into the grayness below. All around you, you see nothing but gray.

Welcome to the gray zone. Life’s major transitions, divorce, career uncertainty, global upheaval are often a lot like the gray zone. You find your life turned upside down and you step into the unknown filled with risk, uncertainty and ambiguity.

By raising the bar on your personal leadership and self-management skills you will be better able to tolerate and eventually thrive on the uncertainty. In fact, just as divers do, you will begin to see and experience the beautiful world of the depths of the sea.
Imagine what could be possible by experiencing major life transitions with less anger, stress, guilt and self-abuse.

Stress causes poor breathing, which increases susceptibility to a breakdown of bodily systems, illness, and more. With simple breathing exercises and the science of sacred sound (mantra or NAAM), you can reset and balance the autonomous nervous system so that the rest/relaxation (parasympathetic) response becomes stronger.

Finally, by understanding and harnessing the power in your hands through the application of mudras, you can access, stimulate and heal every part of the body and brain.

My methodology integrates best practices from Executive/Life Coaching and Naam Yoga Therapies to help you gain clarity, forgive past wrongs, make amends, learn from any perceived failures, and bounce back even when things don’t always work out the way you wanted them to.

Executives that I work with are using Naam Yoga self-management techniques to be better leaders and to achieve peak performance without burning out at companies as diverse as VNSNY, Microsoft, Booz Allen Hamilton, WICT, NBCU, and many small emerging companies. By controlling your breathing through simple and easy meditative exercises that take no more than 15 minutes, you will find that you can embrace the “gray zone,” reduce stress and gracefully move into your next life’s chapter.
The “hard” part is actually sitting down and doing these exercises on a regular basis. In our busy world, we often do not allow ourselves to disconnect from the screens (whether TV, Blackberry, i-pad, computer, and the like), the “to do” lists, and the constant frenzy of our work and home life. For a person who begins a meditative practice, it is often very hard to sit for even five minutes. But, for those of you who embrace that challenge, you will reap the benefits of a calm and focused mind.
Below are my top three meditative exercises for a person going through a major life transition:

EXERCISE 1: STRESS REDUCTION BREATHING

Using this hand symbol – Tatwa Mudra - will maximize the benefits of the breathing exercises.
Are you are feeling anxious, reactive and unfocused? If you answer “yes,” do the following exercise to regain equilibrium. It is effective in as little as three repetitions.
When you breathe in, count to four slowly, and breathe in 2 counts through your stomach and 2 counts up through your chest. When you breathe out, also count to four slowly, and again focus on moving the breath through your chest and then your stomach. Sit comfortably on a chair or sit Indian style on the floor for this and the other exercises. Place your fingertips together as shown in the photo below.
Inhale through your nose in 4 counts /exhale through your nose in 4 counts
Inhale through mouth in 4 counts /exhale through mouth in 4 counts
Inhale through nose in 4 counts /exhale through mouth in 4 counts
Inhale through mouth in 4 counts /exhale through nose in 4 counts
Repeat this cycle of inhale/exhale. I challenge my clients to do this pattern for three minutes, by setting an egg timer. Once they have mastered three minutes after two weeks or so, I then challenge them to do this exercise for five minutes.

EXERCISE 2: ANGER REDUCTION BREATHING

Negative emotions such as anger and fear are detrimental to our well-being including our physical/mental health. Anger compromises the immune system and often causes us to say and do things we may regret later.
When you feel anger rising — cool yourself down with a yoga breathing method called Sitali pranayama. Simply inhale through your mouth (and if you can, with a curled tongue) as slowly as you can, then exhale through your nose (tucking your tongue back into your mouth) as slowly as you can. You will feel benefits after three repetitions. Do this for up to 5 minutes, or until you feel cooled down. Sitali, which literally means to “cool” works like an air conditioner on an overheated system — reducing anger, reducing toxic heat in the body, boosting the immune system and facilitating receptivity and enhancing communication — all by taking a person out of defense mode. When done correctly, this breathing exercise can help transmute anger into its antithesis — creativity.

EXERCISE 3: HARMONIZE YOUR SPEECH

Doing the Light Prayer causes you to feel compassion for yourself and your ex-spouse, former boss etc and reduce anger and hostility, while helping you to slow the breath down. You should read this prayer as slowly as possible. First say the prayer using “me,” then say it again using the name of your ex-spouse, former boss or anyone you view as adversarial. When you change the way you feel about your ex by saying this prayer, you will find that your ex will respond by changing his/her negative feelings about you.

Light before me
.

Light behind me.

Light at my left.

Light at my right.

Light above me.

Light beneath me.

Light unto me.

Light in the eyes of those who see me.

Light in the ears of those who listen to me.

Light in the hearts of those who think of me.

Light in the hearts of those who speak of me.

Light restore me to health
.

Light be always in my heart.

Light be within me.

Light establish me forever.

Light be around me and preserve me.

Light be before me and lead me.

Light be within me and give me life.

Light be near me and rule me.

Light be beneath me and fortify me.

I love the Light in those whom I may have offended, knowingly or unknowingly.

May the light be with them
.

So be it.

So it is.

It is done.

The New Normal is NOT Normal

Published Tuesday, December 06, 2011

  by Elizabeth Carpenter, MS, L.Ac.

When is the last time you felt truly vital? Vital as in you weren’t pushing through exhaustion, you didn’t have pain, you didn’t need caffeine or stimulants, your sleep was easy and refreshing, your stomach and digestion were perfect, your face was dark circle free and your skin lively, your mind was calm, your memory excellent, your focus sharp. How long has it been?

Today there is a new epidemic of diseases. Many have names—IBS, ADHD, infertility Weight Loss Resistance…the list goes on and on. Any many do not--we just put up with a collection of vague symptoms, take a variety of medicines to get through, and consider it “normal.”
And if you go with the straight dictionary definition, it is: “ conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular.”

But fifty or sixty years ago this was not normal. A hundred years ago most of our 21st Century Illnesses did not exist, or occurred only in our aged.

But today, we have assault on multiple fronts, largely engineered by our own progress. Most of us are experiencing overwhelm on a daily basis.

From the point of view of evolution, the adaptation mechanism we’re hard-wired with is meant to get us out of the occasional jam we get ourselves into—predators, food shortage, turf wars. The powerful chemistry triggered for our survival is was not engineered to represent a sustained state.

But today, most of us live in constant overwhelm:

• Information Overload
• Extreme Work Hours & Responsibility
• Insufficient Support Network
• 24/7 Communication Expectation
• Multiple alerts to respond to—numerous email accounts, more than one phone, texts….
• Toxins & Chemical Onslaught in our personal care products, cleaners, packaging, furnishings…
• Chemicals in our food & water
• Drugs in our food & water
• Hormones in our food & water
• Genetically Modified Food our bodies don’t know how to recognize
• Radiation from computers, cell phones and other personal devices
• Electromagnetic stress from communication lines, towers and grids

The clean-up and detoxification system our cells and systems have evolved, was never mean to handle the 10,500 of chemicals (many untested for human exposure, and most not tested for compatibility with one another or simultaneous exposures) found in personal care products.

The average woman begins her day with a skincare and cosmetic routine featuring more than 125 toxins, many of which are carcinogens. (Check the safety of your products here)

Such as:

  • Lead
  • DEA (listed as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer)
  • Propylene Glycol (used in antifreeze and hydraulic fluids as a solvent and associated with kidney damage, liver abnormalities, damaged cell membranes and more)
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a mutagen capable of changing the information in genetic material of your cells)
  • Heavy Metals
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates (in plastics, known hormone disruptors)
  • Dozens more

We’re adding, adding, adding toxins into our lives. And we need avoid those we can and detox them out, regularly.

As they accumulate, they enter deeper and deeper. Down to the cellular level where they destroy our cell membranes, handicap our cellular energy production, hoard waste materials, leading to disruption of our hormones, inflammatory patterns of all degenerative diseases,  and preventing our natural healing mechanisms from fully functioning.

What we’ve designed to advance us is not just a hallmark of our progress and ascendance, it is partly why we are sick:

What generations before us faced in their later lives, if ever, we see in our 30’s, our 20’s and even in our children. Illnesses and health issues that barely existed 100 years ago are our “new normal.”

• Weight Loss Resistance
• Infertility
• Hormone Imbalance
• Thyroid
• Autoimmune
• ADHD
• Autism Spectrum
• Chronic Pain
• IBS & Chronic Digestive Issues
• Asthma, Sinusitis & Allergies
• Sleep & Energy Disturbances
• Anxiety & Depression
• Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
• Mystery Illnesses

We can rise to the new millennium challenges. We can harness the wellness wiring within to create a new norm of physical health, mental agility, emotional stability and spiritual groundedness.

Oriens is a latin root, meaning “toward the rising sun.” It speaks of a new day, transformation. The Oriens Approach is a step-by-step proven method to create real change in your life. We invite you to raise your bar on personal wellbeing and power.

Why You Can't Lose Weight & How You Can

Published Wednesday, November 16, 2011
by Elizabeth Carpenter, MS, L.Ac.

“There is absolutely a fundamental idea when it comes to weight & obesity - that the way you get fat is by taking in more calories than you expend. It is the gluttony & sloth hypothesis: We eat too much & exercise too little. It sounds undeniable, but this doesn’t tell us anything meaningful about why we get fat.”

-Stanford & Harvard University scientist-journalist, Gary Tobbs

As a health professional I first found this news shocking. And then, I looked at the research.

The good news / bad news is two-fold:
1. You absolutely can take charge of your weight, by addressing the right issue.
2. Obesity & Weight Loss Resistance and The New Millennium Diseases – cancers, autoimmune issues, Alzheimers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, the list goes on – share a root problem. Address it and you reduce your risks for all of them.

In 1990 the CDC informed us that 14% of Americans were obese, and warned us that if we didn’t change what we were doing, we would face an epidemic. 14% might not sound like a lot, until we think about 300 million people.

What did we do with that information as a nation? We did what we do best—we started selling. Suddenly lots of doctors and experts on TV appeared, telling us how to lose weight and be healthy. New books came out every month. New articles in magazines appeared weekly. New pills. Even Subway and Taco Bell came out with diets.

After millions and millions of dollars spent, 9 years later—by 1999 – the CDC told us that now 20% of Americans were obese. More diets, more pills, more experts, more books and articles. In 2008 the percentage of obese Americans leapt to 24-30%. The current projection is that by 2020, 75% of us will be obese.
75% is not a big number or even a huge number, it’s a ridiculous number. It points to a very sick nation.

So the question is, “Is our nutrition working?” Clearly, the answer is “No.”

So what is our real problem with our weight? (hint: it’s the same as with our health)

Our problem is we have bought into 3 Myths that make us fatter, not leaner, sicker, not healthier.

Myth #1: It’s About Calories IN vs. Calories OUT
It’s partially true, if you reduce your calories and exercise more, on average a woman will lose 15-20 pounds, a man 20-25. But most diet/exercise warriors will gain it back as the body adjusts to its new set point. It will require greater and greater restriction and increase in exercise to continue losing weight. It is also likely you will yo-yo the same pounds back on when uncontrollable urges hit in response to the next stressful event.

But worse, for most, the pound loss will be muscle rather than fat, because we have not taught the body to burn fat! So it burns muscle instead!

Myth #2: More exercise = More Weight Loss
But a review of research on exercise shows us there is no compelling evidence that exercise affects weight in a permanent way. Exercise is extremely important for our health—for many reasons! But it is not the crux of sustainable weight loss. To lose weight, exercise is the cherry on the top.

Myth #3: Fat Makes You Fat
Fat does not make you fat. It is the inability to burn fat that makes you fat! In fact, good fats HELP you burn fat! Fat has gotten a bad rap. We have grossly oversimplified the cholesterol issue, and thrown the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. Learning to use good fats effectively can turn us into fat-burning, lean muscle-building machines and balance our cholesterol and hormone picture for optimal health.

The unfortunate truth is, we have trained ourselves to be sugar-burners, not fat-burners. And as long as this remains true, we will not sustain our weight loss. And, we will lose our health.

Your body can only use 2 things for energy:
1. Sugar
2. Fat

Why Your Weight Issue Is Not Your “Fault”
Healthy people can burn both sugar and fat for energy. But most Americans can only burn sugar. The inability to burn fat for energy leads to uncontrollable cravings. And this undesirable situation pivots on a hormone called Leptin.

The hormone Leptin controls food cravings and fat burning instructions for your body.   The hormone Insulin controls sugar in and out of the cell.

Truth: To understand weight loss in the 21st century, you have to understand hormones. And to fix the hormone issue, you have to go deeper than hormones. To fix our weight and health problems, we must work at the cellular level.

“ Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them. “—Albert Einstein

We are throwing pills, diets, hormones, effort, information and a whole lot of money at symptoms, when the real problem lies at a deeper level – at the level of the cell. We need to understand and address the root cause, not the symptom that we see.

Obesity is a symptom. Weight Loss Resistance is a symptom. Diseases are symptoms. The pandemic / epidemic we really face is cellular inflammation.

And the cost of cellular inflammation is far greater than our appearance. Cellular inflammation drives cardiovascular disease and diabetes, cancers and other autoimmune issues, brain fog and attention issues, fatigue and sleep problems, depression, anxiety, thyroid and hormone imbalances of all kinds. In fact cellular inflammation is now understood to be the root of almost every health issue we face, as well as premature aging. It is the great plague of the 21st century. It is the heart and foundation of what we now call The New Millennium Diseases. And you can address it.

But what about people who are eating healthily and still can’t lose weight, still get sick?
Most of us who are health conscious are eating well and taking supplements. You can take the best supplements in the world. You can eat organic, vegan, raw and paleo. You can eat the Blood Type diet or take any other proven approach. But if you cannot get your nutrition into your cells, it doesn’t matter.

If your diet is good and your supplementation is good and you are still sick or overweight, you can be confident your problem is not your nutrition, it is your bionutrition. It’s about your nutrition getting into your cells. That is the purpose of food, it’s why we eat. And its how we command ourselves toward wellness or illness.

Would you like to overcome your problem with weight and reverse weight loss resistance?

Are you ready to regain your health and solve chronic issues?

Are you excited to stack the odds in your favor against serious illness?

Or to slow down the aging clock?

To do so you need to: Understand, Plan, Execute.
1. Understand Your Issue – let’s test, not guess. Through important fact finding questions, and testing we’ll determine what’s wrong and what we need to address.

2. Plan – Once we know what’s going on, we’ll create a realistic plan you can follow to achieve your weight loss or health goal.

3. Execute & Empower– a combination of at-home steps, in-office care, and a support system will step you through to success.

Centered Leadership

Published Wednesday, November 02, 2011
by Kelley Black, Founder of Balancing the Executive Life

"Women start careers in business and other professions with the same level of intelligence, education and commitment as men. Yet comparatively few reach the top echelons." ~ McKinsey Leadership Project

Does the statement above make you cringe? When I first read it I felt my stomach turn and I realized I was holding my breath. Why? The biggest challenges in modern work, life and organizations need and respond to what are traditionally thought to be "female" strengths and styles. Here are some examples...

Managing and developing global teams - requires more sensitivity than traditional localized structures

Approaching cultural diversity as a strength - requires enhanced intuitional, projective and protective intelligences for greater perception, awareness and openness to possibilities

Creating inclusive, responsible plans and making ethical decisions - requires compassion, humanity and a spiritual connection

Again, these strengths and styles are all traditionally female.

Centered Leadership is a new approach to leadership that helps women gain confidence, optimal health. It is a model for thriving in business and life.

Centered Leadership is about expanding your spiritual, mental, emotional and physical capacity so you can achieve peak performance without burning out in the process. Centered Leadership makes you a better strategic thinker, inspires others and positively impacts the bottom line at home & work.

Naam Coaching gives you the support you need to be a Centered Leader. Naam Coaching expands your capacity, connects you to your feminine spirit and the strength therein. It is a game changer for business and life.

Here are some best practices that we encourage you to integrate into each day to achieve Centered Leadership:

Establish a Collaborative Mindset - View your colleagues as potential allies rather than threats. The same with your spouses, partners and anyone else you may be having a conflict with. Ask for their opinions and listen to what they have to say. Work on inclusion and resist exclusion. Use collaboration and cooperation to remove tension.

Reach out to others
- Find ways to connect on a personal level. Proactively look for opportunities to help others. Focus on what you can do to benefit the other person NOT vice versa.

Raise the bar on your health/wellbeing – Your health is more than an annual checkup. Commit to optimal health by taking care of your mental, emotional, spiritual and physical bodies. Do daily practices to alleviate stress. Build a true partnership with your healthcare providers and consider them to be “trusted advisors.” Understand your energetic imprint, karmic influences and ways of bringing self-healing and a permanent cure to symptoms that manifest in the physical body.

Develop and use your intuition - Trusting your intuition is a great way to enhance your decision-making skills. Listen to your instincts and debrief with a trusted advisor, colleague or mentor. Note the outcomes of your intuitive decision-making and capture them in writing. Doing so will help you develop your intuitive ability.

Meditate daily - Meditation is essentially a deeper state of thought and relaxation then we normally achieve. It is good for health, healing, de-stressing and will heighten your connection to your intuition. Naam Meditation will open your heart, awaken and enhance your feminine strengths. It makes you grounded, authentic and attuned to who you really are and your vision.

Build your confidence - Get comfortable in your own skin by valuing your inner worth. This helps you get rid of jealousy, pettiness and the tendency to gossip. You will be able to assess situations and people neutrally and objectively for mutually beneficial outcomes.

Put yourself out there - When it comes to connecting with others take a risk. Go out of your way to greet a colleague. Be the first to say hello. Don't wait to initiate contact and never ignore another person. Everyone longs for connection and it can simply be a big friendly smile.

Your Placebo and Nocebo Effect

Published Sunday, July 17, 2011

Elizabeth Carpenter, MS, L.Ac., CEFP
Oriens Founder, Director

Our minds are so powerful; our beliefs so pivotal.

Most of know about the placebo effect -- the phenomenon in which healing occurs in patients or research subjects because they expect it, though they have received a sham or substitute treatment incapable of promoting the healing that in fact occurred. Fully one third of positive treatment outcomes in all branches of medicine, complementary as well as biomedical, are attributed to the placebo effect.

But do you know about the nocebo effect? Here, the subjects manifest symptoms of—or worse, actually contract—an illness because they believe they have been exposed to it, have the genes for it or have other increased risk. “Worried sick,” literally.

Yes, our minds are that powerful; our beliefs are that pivotal. And so, the fundamental questions become, why are we not more eager to manage our minds to create abundant, optimal health and wellbeing? And how can we tap into the opportunity?

Our health and our beliefs generate one another as they are expressions of the same energy in different form.

This is what mind-body medicine is about, or at least, can be about. For example, in Chinese Medicine we have profound teaching and tools that invite integration of mind and body, with all the emotional and spiritual benefits of the integration. Mind and body are considered fluid forms of energy that co-produce one. They are an energetic continuum, rather than a duality.

The enormous opportunity here is to consciously leverage the energy continuum.  In this approach both the patient and the practitioner, engage the multiple levels of mind, body, emotion and spirit simultaneously, as energy is manipulated with the intent and strategy of the continuum.

Where is your mind leading your body? Are you ready to lay claim to your full power, to thrive, to invite the full measure of your healing capacity into your life?

Who Are the New Spiritual Teachers?

Who are the new Spiritual Teachers?

Adapted from “New Paradigm Teaching” from the Silence of the Heart by Paul Ferrini.

New paradigm spiritual teachers claim no authority over others. They do not pretend to have the answers for others. They speak only of their experience. They invite others to share in what they have learned from their experience.

They do not preach. They do not try to fix. They simply accept others as they are and encourage others to find their own truth.

They empower. They see the light in others and encourage it. They don’t close their eyes to the darkness. They do not deny the darkness or go to battle against it. They know there is nothing wrong, no evil to oppose, no battles to fight. They just gently encourage the Light. They know the light itself will heal all wounds.

New paradigm teachers do not try to heal others. They encourage others to heal themselves through self acceptance and self love.

The old paradigm teacher wants to heal others and save the world. The new paradigm teacher knows that others are fine the way they are and the world is already redeemed.

Why is this? Has the new paradigm teacher closed her eyes? Doesn’t she see the suffering in the world, the environmental catastrophe, the endemic violence? Oh yes, she sees the struggle and the pain, but she has a different interpretation of them .She doesn’t believe that people are guilty or that the world is doomed. She sees the vast call for love. She sees the universal cry for acceptance and understanding. And this is what she gives.

Not fixing. Not salvation. Not intellectual remedies for physical problems.

Does she give food and medical supplies if they are needed? Of course, but she remembers to whom she is giving them. She remembers the call and she answers it.

She knows that food is helpful, but it is not the solution to the problem. It is not what is being asked for.

She looks in to the eyes of others and sees their divinity as her own, and asks how she can be of help.

What is asked for is love. Love is the only food. Love is what she gives.

Managing Overwhelm and Stress by Elizabeth Carpenter MS, L.Ac., CEFP

Published Monday, June 20, 2011

Overwhelm and stress are a recurring theme for fertility,  menopause transition patients and achievers of all ages managing career, family, health challenges and more. How do you break the pattern? What do you do when anxiety, fear and overwhelm hit?

Patients and those I do business with often comment on how “zen” I am and how relaxing it must be to be in my profession of Chinese Medicine and wellness. Let me tell you, as much as I completely adore and would not trade my life for a minute, and I have the benefit of the medicine's wisdom all around me— owning and running a company during a recessionis is not relaxing!

Which brings me to my point: managing stress and cultivating peace in our lives is a choice we make and a set of tools we employ moment to moment, day to day. It accumulates. It becomes a habit. It becomes your nature. Calm is a result. Joy and tranquility are the return on an investment!  Fully programmed and trained to worry by family and culture, I can worry with the best of them…but why? Worry is a completely unproductive energy sapping activity.

Worry is no more than a thought-feeling the body is having.  The mind creates a negative outcome on a future event.  Worry is fortune telling at it's worst!

Worry is an emotion.   Emotions are not a sum of who we are or an accurate accounting of circumstance.   But our minds can go crazy leading us down into the fear hole. We can thank our early brains for that. They've been with us all along, keeping us out of harm's way, eternally on the look-out for danger.

Yet, as we say "thank you for sharing" to our mind for the reporting on the brain's scan for potential danger, we must also acknowledge the physics of problem solving.  As Einstein suggested, it is is best done in a state of play, of wonder. Solutions come when we are relaxed, off-topic.  Personally, my greatest breakthrough's arrive while working out or in the shower, not when I am in hot pursuit of an answer.

So what gets us there? What induces that relaxation state? What helps us neutralize worry when it strikes?  Habits that become tools at-the-ready.

Some of my favorites are breathing meditation, spiritual reading that brings me back to bigger perspective and re-introduces me to the truth of deeper connections, acupuncture naps, exercise, an observation walk (tuning into all that is going on outside of me and my mind on the streets of Manhattan).

Did you ever notice that when you are on vacation and you are still thinking or "working" that you feel a powerful sense of possibility? You come back refreshed not only because you switched physical/spacial gears, but because relaxation allowed you to background focus on your challenges. Inspiration hits. New possibilities and perspectives arise.

How do we bring THAT back with us? We decide upon it, and dedicate time to it every day.  We make a small space every day for play, for relaxing, for self-care, for being non-productive, for exercising.  As achievers, we are constantly in motion, solving, multi-tasking.  In the quality-of-life challenge of breaking the worry habit, we're called to let it all go.  We need to hit the "Enough" button, and shift our own gears.

Fertility in Your Forties by Elizabeth Carpenter, MS, L.Ac., CEFP

Published Wednesday, June 08, 2011

Conceiving and healthy pregnancy in the forties … sadly, women we see are desperate about being in their late 30’s and 40’s and their presumed inability to get pregnant.

Yet other women in this same age group stop using birth control for the identical reason--they've been told they're infertile-- and find themselves with unplanned pregnancies. Did you know this age group seeks abortions as frequently as teens?

Can we stop passing around the notion that women in their forties are infertile?

Chinese medicine tells us that we are capable of conception and childbearing up until menopause.

I was organizing my email recently and came across this note and I wanted to share it ... Not because it is unusual, but because it is typical!

“I want to thank you both so much because I really feel like the acupuncture, the massage, and the supportive/optimistic energy at Oriens helped me get pregnant (when my doctor told me I had only a 5% chance of conceiving naturally . . .”

The only thing truly unusual about this email, is that the doc had given her 5% odds.  Our patients often have received worse prognoses than that.  A few times I’ve had patients tell me that their doc told them they had less than 1% chance. And yet…Life comes through when circumstances are right.

What about the statistics?  They reflect data related to reproductive medical clinic outcomes, based on couples experiencing difficulty who seek help -- not couples world-over.  And for many couples, thankfully high tech exists!  At Oriens, we thoroughly enjoy partnering with great RE’s for IVF, IUI and natural IVF—a phenomenal combination where the couple  prepares through natural medicine and then benefits from high tech.

There's no question that the ease of achieving healthy pregnancy declines with age, particularly in the forties. But we also know that Mother Nature does not serve her best eggs first. So what remains in the reserve is often viable.  And we know that the environment in which eggs mature (nutrient and blood supply, etc.) contributes to "good" and "bad" eggs, as well as to the quality of the uterine environment for an embryo and child.  So we focus here, on what we can influence, to nurture fertility and increase the odds.

Since Nature has not quite caught up with modernism, women in their forties typically have more to accept, forgive and invest in, in order to lay their claim on motherhood.  But they are not infertile. As we delay child-bearing until we find love, or create financial security, or until we have the maturity to fully appreciate the miracle of family….more is required to balance the body and bring fertility forward.

We need to adjust our diets, we need to face our fears about it “not happening” so the body can relax into the knowledge that we will be OK whether we do or don’t have a biologic child—and free up energy for reproduction that is siphoned into fear management. We need to get more blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, we need to balance hormones.  Sometimes we need medical procedures to clear the path.

Acupuncture, Nutrition, Maya Abdominal Massage, , self-care routines, counseling that leads to self-knowledge and trust. These are not just preparations for conception and healthy pregnancy.  They are investments…in a healthy body, in a peaceful spirit, in a calm mind. A kind of deep strength emerges, a vibrancy—fertility showing herself!  Wow!...what preparation for motherhood!  And what lucky children to be loved by such moms!
